Course description

Trauma can get in the way of learning. Often showing up as behaviour that's easily labelled: unmotivated, distracted, unfocused, or defensive towards authority. What looks like a "problem" is often a survival strategy. Or students can struggle with trauma themselves while leading a seemingly normal life. For example they can be overcritical towards themselves, perfectionistic or suffer from amongst others insomnia or anxiety. When the nervous system is stuck in fight, flight or freeze mode, the brain has less capacity for planning, self-regulation and analytical thinking.

In this session we will explore trauma-sensitive education and go into:

  • What trauma is, and its effect on learning
  • How to recognize it in students — and what to do
  • What this means for your work

On top of that, we'll practice a few simple exercises, tools you can take straight into your daily work with students.

The training will be executed by Marjon van Opijnen
